Instead, we need to re-energize our classrooms with interest-driven activities, student choice, and more opportunities for movement. Start with Rigor and Relevance If students aren’t completing classwork, it’s worth asking: Are the assignments too simple or overly difficult? Work that's too easy can lead to boredom, while overly challenging tasks may cause frustration. Another key consideration—are the assignments meaningful or engaging for your students? While not every activity needs to be over-the-top exciting, there should be at least one element that connects to students’ interests. This could be as small as including real-world statistics tied to their hobbies in a math problem or linking a story’s plot structure to a movie they know well. In my social studies classroom, I’ve found that a little intrigue or competition can make a big difference. For instance, rather than asking students to simply research how early settlers in the Andes adapted to their environment, I might first introduce the geography and climate, then have students make informed predictions.
